Blast furnace-iron making

Blast furnace-iron making

Short Description:

Blast furnace iron making is the most popular technology of extracting iron from iron ore all over the world, using metallurgical coke as the main fuel to reduce the raw material in the shaft blast furnace, such as lump iron ore, sinter, pellet, iron powder, to get the qualified product—pig iron for making steel or foundry according exact need.

Combining the objective requirements of each customer with the actual situation, MET is always committed to providing mature, scientific, cost-effective iron making solutions for customers, striving for building long-term friendly relationships with customers.

Iron making, the first step in making steel, is the process of producing iron from iron ore through a series of chemical and physical processes. The most common method of iron production is blast furnace iron making, which involves the use of a blast furnace. Before the iron ore is charged to the furnace, the iron ore usually needs iron processing, such as crushing, sintering, upgrading and pelletizing.

Blast furnaces operate on the principle of chemical reduction whereby carbon monoxide converts iron oxides to elemental iron. Blast furnaces differ from bloomeries and reverberatory furnaces in that in a blast furnace, flue gas is in direct contact with the ore and iron, allowing carbon monoxide to diffuse into the ore and reduce the iron oxide.

The blast furnace uses heat to convert iron oxides into liquid iron, which can then be applied for a variety of industrial purposes. The blast furnace is a brick-lined, stainless steel stack, which is heated using pre-heated air. During the iron production process, iron ore, fuel (coke), and slag making flux (limestone) are loaded from the top of a furnace in a specific ratio, and preheated air is blown into the tuyere located at the lower part of the furnace along the circumference of the furnace. The chemical reactions take place throughout the furnace as the material falls downward. The main products of blast furnace smelting are pig iron and ferroalloy, and the by-products are slag, gas and furnace dust.
